Antique oil on canvas, signed by Rimoldi, “La calèche”

£1,450

Antique oil on canvas, signed by Rimoldi, “La calèche” (The Carriage). Beautiful original frame with brass nameplate. Very good condition. Pietro Adamo Rimoldi, Milanese painter, 1869-1939.

An atmospheric oil on canvas street scene by Italian painter Pietro Adamo Rimoldi (1869–1939), depicting a horse-drawn cab paused before a grand Milanese façade. The view likely captures the bustle around the Piazza della Scala, rendered in soft winter light. Impressionistic brushwork in muted colours conveys the damp air and subdued hues of the city, while the cab’s red-spoked wheels and the softly glowing façade in the distance add quiet vitality. Signed Rimoldi at the lower right and presented in its original molded wood frame with the artist’s name on a brass label.
Born and based in Milan, Pietro Adamo Rimoldi studied at the Accademia di Brera under Giuseppe Bertini and was influenced by the painter Emilio Gola, whose tonal realism and interest in atmospheric urban scenes shaped his style. He became known for his cityscapes of Milan’s Navigli, piazzas, and elegant thoroughfares, capturing the rhythm of modern life with painterly restraint and impressionistic handling. In this work, Rimoldi’s subtle palette and broken colour evoke the misty light and poetic bustle of Milan in the belle époque, where architecture, movement, and atmosphere merge into a single harmonious mood.
